When you see a guy pick on or provoke someone else until they give a funny reaction, do you laugh along with the guy? Do you like flirty trash? Do you gravitate toward the guys who flirt with everyone, full-well knowing that they’re trash but you want some of dat anyway?

Then the Gadfly Guy is for you!

Still confused? Allow me to elaborate!

A Gadfly is a character who frequently does things or says things in order to provoke others, make others have a reaction the Gadfly finds funny, or just to pick on people for the heck of it. They are often the tease of the game and are flirty and sassy, making flirty jokes in order to provoke, etc. Most of the time they want attention and do Gadfly things in order for people to notice them. The Gadfly description often includes characters who are mischievous, manipulative, womanizers, players, sly, sarcastic, superficial, and sharp-tongued. (You can read more on the TvTropes page).

While there are a decent amount of Gadflys out there in the otome world, there aren’t as many as one would think. There are plentiful flirty guys in otome games, but since Gadflys require the provocation aspect, there aren’t as many of them.

But fear not! For I have compiled a list of all the Gadflys I have experienced/heard about, including brief descriptions of each and my thoughts on them so you can see who’s the right Gadfly for you!

My favorite man of all time. While his character is deep and complex, Gadfly is certainly a characteristic that applies to him. He’s bored, and what better way to relieve boredom than to see people’s reactions? People are always changing, and as someone who has lived an uncountable amount of time, Joker likes to see new things.

Loki is the pinnacle of Gadfly-ness. Look at him. Look at this ho. He just looks like he’s going to tease someone at all times. He pulls pranks on people and loves seeing them overreact. He’s also sassy, which I love. 10/10, would be trash with him.

Souji Okita~Hakuouki

Souji is a bit more reserved than Loki in his Gadfly-ness, but oh boy, does he still count. He steals Hijikata’s poetry and dramatically reads it. He casually tells people he doesn’t remember their loved ones even though he killed them a few days ago. He is just such trash.

Kageyuki Shiraishi~Collar x Malice

This man’s job is to read people’s emotions and reactions, so why not make them fun reactions? He purposely asks leading questions, words things awkwardly and just generally is a turd. And I love him for it.

Okazaki Kei~Collar x Malice

While not as much of a Gadfly as Shiraishi, Kei certainly has some tendencies, often saying things he knows will provoke others.

Sholmes is like…a selective Gadfly. He’s really only a Gadfly when Lupin is around, but he’s such a Gadfly around Lupin that it has made him my favorite character in the series.

Hikage~Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly

Hikage can be quite sassy and does pick on others for his own amusement, but he does so with negative intent as he feels superior to the others. He’s enough to get your Gadfly senses tingling though.

Karasuba~Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly

Karasuba flirts with the MC incessantly for the lols and also picks fights with others because he thinks it’s funny. He felt like more of a Gadfly to me than Hikage.

Alvaro is a womanizer and a player and a flirt and a tease and he’s great. Would recommend.

Laito Sakamaki~Diabolik Lovers

Is Laito a Gadfly? Yes, probably, but he also is one of the most negative Gadflys you’ll see. Sure, he tries to get a rise out of people, but he also has negative intent for almost everything he does. So, while he is probably a Gadfly, you also have to be okay with him being one with the full intention of hurting others.

Asagiri~The Men of Yoshiwara: Ohgiya
